The Crown Sydney casino in Barangaroo is finally able to start its gambling business, more than 18 months after the resort’s non-gambling business began. The main casino floor of the AU$2.2bn (US$1.5bn) property is now open for business; the full VIP gaming offering will not be fully ready until October.
was deemed unfit to have a casino license in the province
The casino’s parent company, Crown Resorts, was the reason the casino couldn’t start once development was finished. The company was deemed unfit to hold a casino license in the province due to extensive deficiencies in its operations with existing casino properties.
A big focus on table games
The members-only ground floor of Crown Sydney has 160 different tables, in addition to 66 electronic tables. There are also 30 private salons available as part of the VIP facility. There are no slots in the VIP-only offer, with a minimum bet of AU$20 (US$14). People can access the casino for free if they are part of the Crown Rewards program.
the interest has exceeded our expectations”
Commenting on the response to date regarding the property’s casino launch, Crown Sydney CEO Simon McGrath said: “The interest has exceeded our expectations in terms of membership. I think we’ll have a pretty good pace relatively soon.”
It is unclear what sort of financial targets Crown has for the new gambling business in Sydney.
Dealing with various problems
Crown Resorts finally seems to be getting its operations across Australia in order. The past year has been the subject of independent investigations in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. The result of each of these investigations was that Crown Resorts was deemed unfit to own any of its Australian casino licenses. The first reason for the investigation was media reports of Crown Resorts’ links to organized crime through high roller junkets, as well as the ill-treatment of gambling addicts.
procedures, management and board of directors overhauled
The company has taken extensive steps to try to become eligible to hold casino licenses again. It has completely overhauled its procedures, management and governance to meet the demands of regulators. The company has also been acquired by US private equity firm Blackstone in a deal worth AU$8.9bn (US$6.2bn). Crown was granted a conditional license to offer gaming at its Sydney casino in June; the permit is valid until the end of 2023. The company is still awaiting the question of whether it can obtain an unconditional permit.
