Pass a vote
Cannabis lounges will soon be arriving in the city of Las Vegas.
A council vote on Wednesday swung 5-1 in favor of the lounges, with the only opponent being Victoria Seaman. The city had already automatically opted into the licensing process by failing to respond to a letter from the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board earlier this month, but still had the option of withdrawing with Wednesday’s vote.
sale of alcohol is prohibited
Unincorporated Clark County and Las Vegas are eligible to host the lounges, although the sale of alcohol will be prohibited. Visitors can legally smoke marijuana outside their homes as long as they stay on the property.
Marijuana Lounge Rules
Rumors of marijuana lounges coming to Nevada have been circulating for months. State voters legalized recreational marijuana use in 2016, but an estimated 40 million tourists a year were disregarded and resorted to illegally smoking in hotel rooms, parking garages or simply on the street.
As a result, the violations have piled up over the years, especially as companies continue to build their customer base as a result of the pandemic shutdowns. Councilor Seaman said she would have preferred a trial-and-error system rather than jumping to give lounges the opportunity to set up shop.
Seaman also said on behalf of her constituency that she would have preferred to see the lounges in more commercial areas than residential areas.
most licenses will be distributed to the city’s 17 pharmacies
State licenses are not guaranteed for applicants, although it is believed most licenses will be distributed to the city’s 17 pharmacies with affiliated or nearby lounges.
Twenty licenses will also be given to independent applicants, and half will go to “social equity applicants” who were negatively impacted by marijuana laws prior to the 2016 reversal.
During state licensing, applicants choose the jurisdiction in which they wish to operate. After that, the municipal permit takes effect.
Las Vegas expects business soon
Applicants can already cross a few targets off their landing site list. City attorney Bryan Scott told the city that North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City and Mesquite had opted out.
Much of the upcoming development will depend on the 2019 Social Use Venue, which includes rules for consumption lounges. In addition, cities will be largely powerless against a 2021 decision that legalized lounges.
The ten-day application window opens in October — Clark County is making efforts to finalize licensing regulations.
optimistic that several lounges will open their doors before the end of the year
Las Vegas expects to open its application period in 2023. Meanwhile, Commissioner Tick Segerblom is optimistic that several lounges will open before the end of the year.
Councilor Olivia Diaz was also excited about the business opportunities that could arise from adding another business area to Vegas’ offering.
“I think it’s important for the city to consider the business opportunities that consumption lounges bring, as well as some alleviation of issues that we’re hearing a lot about right now, because we don’t provide people with a place to actually consume when they buy,” Diaz told the Las Vegas Review-Journal after Wednesday’s vote, “We still have a long way to go and some work to do.”
