A milestone for the region
Legends Bay casino has opened its doors for the first time, making it the first new casino in Northern Nevada in over 20 years. The public was able to enter the building on Tuesday after a lavish opening ceremony. Initially there was a VIP-only party where champagne and shrimp cocktails were offered.
The opening day was a huge success for the casino; one visitor tweeted that every slot machine was occupied and that about a thousand people tried to get in while the place was already at full capacity:
Never seen anything like it. It’s opening night in the@legends_bayCasino and every slot machine is occupied, the place is packed and there are about a thousand people waiting outside to get in. I was told this is the first new casino in Reno/Sparks in 27 years. pic.twitter.com/4uiphr7wWj

An impressive facility
The new casino in Sparks is 80,000 square feet and offers a wide variety of gaming options. After promising to be a “players paradise” upon opening, the Legends Bay casino appears to have lived up to. There are over 650 video poker and slot machines, ten live table games and a high roller room.
The Olympia Gaming division of Olympia Companies is the operator of Legends Bay. The company also operates the Casino Fandango in Carson City.
There are also plenty of drink and dining options in the casino, as well as a retail Circa sportsbook. It marks the sixth retail sportsbook for Nevada’s Circa Sports and the first in the northern part of the state. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak attended the opening ceremony. He spoke of how it is an iconic project for Northern Nevada and that it was a “great moment for people across the country to see what Northern Nevada has to offer and attract more tourists to the Silver State.”
The hope is that the opening of the Legends Bay property will boost the economy in Northern Nevada. It has created about 300 permanent jobs and it looks like it could be a major tourist attraction. Gary Coett, CEO of Olympia Gaming, also welcomed the opening of the casino and stated that it has been a long time coming.
smaller than originally planned
A casino project at this location was long in the making. The original purchase of the property took place in 2007, but plans to develop a casino on the site were halted due to the Great Recession. The latter project was smaller than originally planned and broke ground in February 2021. Developers spent approximately $130 million to build the property.
