Dublin-based sportsbook Paddy Power is doing its usual audacity after announcing it would pay out to Liverpool winning the 2022-23 English Premier League (EPL), a week before the season kicks off.
decision was made just before the final whistle
Paddy Power’s decision came just before the final whistle in Liverpool’s 3-1 Community Shield win on Saturday. The traditional curtain-raiser saw The Reds completely defeat the disjointed current EPL title holders, Manchester City. The sportsbook took to Twitter with an ad featuring a beaming Liverpool manager flanked by disgruntled-looking colleagues entitled “The Kop Out”:
🚨 EARLY PAYOUT!
Liverpool defeated Man City 3-1 to win the Community Shield!
After that result, we will pay Liverpool out to win the 2022/23 Premier League title. (Terms and conditions apply.) pic.twitter.com/e1M2ycOWUC

To rub salt in the wounds of the Manchester City stalwarts who left Leicester’s King Power after Liverpool’s defeat, digital advertising vans placed outside the stadium ran the cheeky advertisement.
Known for its disruptive marketing stunts, unlike others, the sportsbook didn’t say the Community Shield as a “glorified friendly.” It said it took the contest “so seriously” that it decided to “be ultra generous and hit the big red button labeled ‘Cash Out’.”
crystal ball time
British radio station Talksport said Paddy Power paid out “ridiculously early” and that punters backing the Reds would receive their winnings nearly nine months in advance.
This isn’t the first time the Irish sportsbook has closed its books early. For the 2020-21 season, Paddy Power paid out that Fulham were relegated from the EPL after just three games into the campaign. The gamble paid off as Fulham didn’t stay in the EPL, and, as Paddy Power reminded bettors in a press release on Monday, “we got it right before.”
While Paddy Power admitted it “could end up with an egg on” [its] face,” the Liverpool-backing bettors told that “your winnings are already flying to you without even a ball being kicked into the top flight.”
Sky Blues are favorites to take the title with odds of -175
The sportsbook had Liverpool as the second favorite for the EPL with an overall shot of +200. Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues are favorites to take the title with an odd of -175. According to reports in the British media, The Kop Out Paddy Power payout has cost a six-figure sum.
Season of change
While Liverpool were impressive against Manchester City, scoring via Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane’s £85m ($104m) replacement Darwin Núñez, they lost 4-0 to Manchester United (+2500) friendly in July in Thailand.
With United in a transfer case of Cristiano Ronaldo and Chelsea (+1300) yet to convince their own managers they are ready, a revitalized, super-fit Tottenham Hotspur (+1400) and an increasingly effective Arsenal (+3300) can its worth a bet.
All in all, it’s a significant season of change for the EPL amid an ongoing row over betting sponsorship. At least Paddy Power always sees the funny side, even if the joke could end up backfired.
